George Washington could have been a king. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, power was firmly in his grip. The Continental Congress recognized both his military prowess and intellectual abilities. Yet the nation formed out of revolution from a King, was born without a new one. Washington ceded power to the new government with shared federal and state roles. Thus, the American Republic owes much to Washington and his wisdom. Many have feared tyrannical control of the United States.
